Civil Court

The Walker River Paiute Tribe has established a division of the Tribal Court that is known as the Civil Court, in accordance to the Title 1 – Tribal Court, of the Tribe’s Law and Order Code. The Tribe now has jurisdiction to cite non-Indians into this Civil Court pursuant to the Tribe’s Traffic Code and any other codes or ordinances that specifically designate the Civil Court as the forum for dispute resolution actions.

In June 2006, the Walker River Paiute Tribe approved the Civil Traffic Code. With the adoption of this Code, the Tribe created an opportunity to collect fines which could be used to fund various tribal interests and is a step in the right direction towards being self sufficient. The Tribe holds default court sessions on a monthly basis if the violators fail to pay fines.

In December of 2006, an ordinance was passed by the Tribal Council for a Civil Court appeal process. The appeal process allows the defendant to argue his case before another Judge and a final decision rendered.

We will be adding a feature that allows individuals to pay their fines on the Internet. If you do not wish to appeal your fine you can use this feature and not have to return to Schurz to pay.
